Blood is blood. I would accept blood from anyone who is assessed to have safe blood, gay, straight, trans or cisgender.
TO THE RED CROSS LIFEBLOOD SERVICE:
WE CALL FOR INDIVIDUAL RISK ASSESSMENT FOR POTENTIAL BLOOD DONORS AND A REMOVAL OF THE SCIENTIFICALLY UNJUSTIFIABLE GAY BLOOD BAN
We the undersigned call on the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood Service to institute a new donor policy that screens potential donors for their individual risk, not the gender of their sexual partner.
We believe the current policy imposing a celibacy period on gay, bisexual and transgender Australians limits the supply of safe blood and stigmatises gay, bi and trans people as a threat to public health.
We believe a policy of individual risk assessment will mean there is more safe blood and less stigma. That is why it has been adopted around the world, including in the UK.
If blood donors are screened for individual risk we would continue to have confidence in the blood supply.
Blood is blood. We would be happy to accept blood from anyone who is assessed to have safe blood, gay, straight, trans or cisgender.
