To the Honourable President and Members of the Senate in Parliament assembled:
The petition of the undersigned shows:
That the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) lacks a stand-alone commissioner dedicated to protecting and promoting LGBTIQA+ human rights.
The AHRC has dedicated commissioners for Sex, Age, Race, Disability, Children, Human Rights and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social justice.
The absence of an LGBTIQA+ Human Rights Commissioner is a weakness in the nation’s human rights framework.
It sends the message that discrimination against LGBTIQA+ Australians is less important than other forms of discrimination.
We ask that the Senate:
Requests the Government appoint an LGBTIQA+ Human Rights Commissioner to the AHRC at the earliest opportunity, and provides the staffing and resources necessary for the Commissioner to fulfil the duties of this full-time role.
